Lost in Translation

Apparently Donald Trump’s love for Putin began with a compliment. Trump says Putin called him a genius and if Vlad is going to be nice to Donald, why shouldn’t Donald be nice to Vlad? It’s all so simple. If only Stalin had sent Truman a candygram, the whole Berlin wall thing would never have happened. BFFs!

But it turns out, Putin did not call Trump a genius. He used a Russian word that means “bright” and is understood as “colorful,” as in “a colorful character.” Which is not the same as brilliant. Still the word was translated, not so wrongly, as “brilliant” as in bright or smart, which Donald retranslated through his narcissism as “a genius” and so it was true love. All is forgiven: the war crimes, the invasions, the domestic killings. Love is not love/Which alters when it alteration finds.

And in his latest phone call Donald may have suggested he and Vlad should seal the deal by tossing out the START missile treaty. True love don’t need no pre-nuptial. Right, Melania?
