Other People’s Money

The new Trump Budget is out and the cuts are vicious as you would expect from the man. Notably, it wants to spend more than $54 billion on the military. That’s more than the combined budget of the entire State Department plus all the money spent on foreign aid. I guess it’s just as General Mattis says, if you’re going to cut State you’ll have to buy more bullets and prepare for war. But wars are always so expensive. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to avoid them?

And while we’re at it, the budget eliminates federal money for meals on wheels. That’s money to get food to old mostly white people who can’t get out. Although I bet they got out to vote for Trump. Michael Mulvaney says he can’t spend money on programs that don’t work, but he wouldn’t say what didn’t work, the meals or the wheels.

For perspective, the cost of Meals on Wheels for one recipient for a year is about the same as the cost of a day’s stay in the hospital for that person. What do you think will happen if shut-ins don’t get the proper nutrition? They’ll end up in the hospital and if they stay more than one day, all the savings for that person will be wiped out.

That’s called penny wise and pound foolish. But Trump never was any good with money.
